Our guides are general information to help you diagnose common print problems. They are not a substitute for your printer’s manual or the manufacturer’s support. Some repairs can void a warranty or damage a printer, so check the manual and warranty before opening or modifying anything.

Follow the manufacturer’s manual first
Where our steps and your printer’s manual differ, the manual is right for your model. We link to the official source for every brand procedure so you can check it yourself.
Warranty
Opening a printer, cleaning parts by hand, flushing a print head, or using refilled or third-party supplies can affect your warranty, depending on the maker and your country. Check your warranty terms before you do any of these. When a printer is under warranty, contacting the maker is usually the best first step for a hardware fault.
Safety
- Turn the printer off and unplug it before touching anything inside, unless the manual tells you otherwise.
- Laser printer fusers get hot. Let the printer cool before reaching in.
- Keep ink and toner away from children and pets, and follow the safety information on the packaging.
Ink, toner and paper
Some test pages and all purge sheets use a lot of ink or toner. Each sheet on this site shows whether its ink use is light, moderate or heavy so you can choose.
