Printer Alignment Test Page
Print the alignment page and look at the long vertical lines. Straight, single lines mean the head is aligned. Doubled, jagged or stepped lines mean it is not, so run your printer’s built-in alignment, then print this page again to confirm. Steps for each model are listed below.
By Online Printer Test PageLast updated
Printed? How did it look?
- Scale: 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page
- Headers and footers: off
- Paper in the tray matches US Letter
What to look for: alignment test page
- Vertical lines should be straight and single. Jagged or doubled lines mean the print head needs aligning.
- In the registration crosses, the colored lines should sit on top of each other.
- Diagonals and the circle should be smooth, not stepped.
What to look for: fine text sheet
- 4 and 5 pt text should still be readable with a magnifier.
- White text on black should not fill in.
- Letters should not look doubled. Doubling points to head alignment.
What to look for: resolution and line pairs
- Count the finest group where you can still see separate lines.
- If one direction blurs sooner than the other, check head alignment or paper feed.
Run the built-in alignment on your printer
Steps are summarized from each maker’s own manuals and support pages, with a link to the source and the date we last checked it. If your model is missing, the closest family usually uses the same menus, but confirm in your manual.

How do I read the alignment page?
- Vertical lines: each should be a single, straight line from top to bottom. A ghost line next to it, or a zigzag, means the passes are out of step.
- Registration crosses: the cyan, magenta, yellow and black lines should sit on top of each other. Colored fringes on one side mean color alignment (on color lasers, color calibration) is off.
- Grid and circle: the circle should be round and the grid square. An oval or stretched grid usually means the page was scaled; the print size checker measures by how much.
- Resolution: for a closer look at sharpness, print the line-pair and starburst sheet from the test print images.
Alignment vs nozzle check
The two are often confused. A nozzle check shows whether every nozzle fires. Alignment makes sure the dots from different passes and colors land in the right place. Fix gaps first, then align. Aligning a head with clogged nozzles gives a poor result because the patterns you are asked to choose from are incomplete.
Questions people ask
What is Epson vertical alignment?
It lines up the print head’s left-to-right and right-to-left passes so vertical lines print as one clean line instead of a doubled or jagged one. Epson printers print several patterns and ask you to pick the one with the straightest lines or fewest gaps.
How do I print an HP printer alignment page?
Most current HP inkjets run alignment from the printer’s control panel, the HP Smart app, or the printer’s Embedded Web Server, and print the alignment page as part of that process. The exact path for your model is in the list on this page.
When should I align the print head?
After installing new cartridges or a new head, after moving the printer, and whenever vertical lines look doubled or text looks blurry with no gaps in the nozzle check.
Does alignment fix missing lines?
No. Missing lines are clogged nozzles; alignment only lines up the passes. Run a nozzle check first, fix any gaps, then align.
